A New Orleans shooting in the French Quarter early Sunday left one killed and nine injured. Details were still sketchy the next day.
Police said eight of the 10 victims were men and two were women. They ranged in age from 20 to 37.
Two men — one of whom was shot — were arrested on illegal gun possession charges, said The New York Times.
Police Superintendent Michael Harrison told a news conference that officers responded to the shooting at around 1:30 a.m. at the intersection of Iberville and Bourbon street, Fox News reported.
He said police don't know what “precipitated the shooting.”
The French Quarter was crowded due to the Thanksgiving holiday and Bayou Classic football game at the Superdome, and the area was being patrolled by more than 30 officers, said Harrison.
“This was not the place or time to bring firearms to the Bayou Classic or any event,” Harrison said. “This is not the place where something like this should happen.”
Glean Williams was selling items at a table a block away when the shooting occurred. “It was panic. Everybody started running. People getting run over, stepped on, knocked over,” he said, per CBS News.
“The violence just continues to spin out of control with people brandishing weapons whenever they think they can, and it’s really unfortunate,” said Mitch Landrieu, the city’s mayor. “It’s just a tragic end to what was otherwise a beautiful weekend.”
