New Rocky Movie: 'Creed' Focuses on Rocky Opponent's Grandson

A new Rocky movie spinoff that focuses on the grandson of Apollo Creed, played by Michael B. Jordan, means Rocky Balboa is "Gonna Fly" again. Sylvester Stallone is set to reprise his role as one of sports' greatest underdogs.

"Fruitvale Station" director Ryan Coogler and star Jordan will team up for the project, called "Creed," in which Jordan will play the privileged grandson of the late movie character (played by Carl Weathers), Balboa's greatest foe and later best friend, who died in the ring during an exhibition match against Ivan Drago. MGM has commissioned the 27-year-old Coogler to write the movie's script, according to Philly.com.

The story centers on Jordan's character becoming a boxer against his family's wishes. Because of the wealth bestowed on him by his grandfather's riches, the young man possesses the gifts of a champion, but seeks the guidance of Stallone's Balboa, who is initially reluctant to teach him the art of boxing.

"Creed" is a dream project for Coogler, according to Philly.com.

Stallone, meanwhile, is working on bringing a musical based on his original 1976 Best Picture "Rocky" to the stage. But he reportedly loved the "Creed" concept, Deadline Hollywood reports.

Coogler and Jordan have gained notoriety with "Fruitvale Station," a drama about Oscar Grant, a 22-year-old who was fatally shot by a Bay Area Rapid Transit police officer on New Year's Day in 2009.

Jordan, who also appeared on "The Wire" and "Friday Night Lights," is a rising star.
