Plans for a new movie series based on the Sonic the Hedgehog video games were announced this week by Sony Pictures Entertainment and SEGA.
"Sonic has had dozens of adventures on the console and the small screen, and we’re thrilled that he’s now coming to the big screen," Marza Animation Planet CEO Masanao Maeda
told Deadline Hollywood.
"Sony Pictures has had great success with hybrid animated and live-action features, and we’re confident that this collaboration will bring a fresh take to Sonic, while still capturing everything that the fans love about him."

Neal H. Moritz of "22 Jump Street" is the producer. Toby Ascher will be executive producer. Upright Citizens Brigade alums Evan Susser and Van Robichaux will pen the script. They are reported to also be working on a script for a live-action "Jetsons" movie.
The movies are scheduled to be released on a roughly annual basis, with the hero, Sonic, battling nemeses like Dr. Eggman, known as Dr. Robotnik in the West. The franchise will also draw on other themes drawn from the video games, which have generated over $1 billion in revenues in the approximately two decades the blue hedgehog has graced the screen.
"There are limitless stories to tell with a character like Sonic the Hedgehog, and a built-in international fan base," said Sony Pictures production president Hannah Minghella. "Along with our wonderful creative partners at Marza, we’re looking to capture everything that generations of fans know and love about Sonic while also growing his audience wider than ever before."
Shortly after the announcement,
Metro UK released a fun list of little known facts about the beloved character, detailing his comic book appearances, his collaboration with Michael Jackson that was later scrapped, and his early cameos in other video games before he starred in his own.
