A new "Star Trek" television series is scheduled for January 2017 and Trekkies will have to watch it on the CBS All Access streaming service.
Alex Kurtzman, who was the co-screenwriter of the "Star Trek" movie reboot in 2009 and 2013's sequel "Star Trek Into Darkness," is developing the new television series, according to the
Los Angeles Times.
The Hollywood Reporter said the new "Star Trek" will have new characters and seek "imaginative new worlds and new civilizations, while exploring the dramatic contemporary themes that have been a signature of the franchise since its inception in 1966."
Kurtzman will serve as executive producer along with Heather Kadin. A writer has not been connected to the series yet.
CBS All Access, which is available for $5.99 per month, is already streaming the previous "Star Trek" series episode. CBS Studios International plans to distribute the new series for television and its multiple platforms.
CBS Television Studios president David Stapf said Kurtzman will maintain the standards for the franchise, according to the Times.
"Everyone here has great respect for this storied franchise, and we're excited to launch its next television chapter in the creative mind and skilled hands of Alex Kurtzman, someone who knows this world and its audience intimately," said Stapf.
The new television series will follow the 50th anniversary of the television series, which debuted in 1966, and a new movie, "Star Trek Beyond," starring Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto set to hit theaters in July 22, 2016, said
Rolling Stone magazine.
Many on social media appeared to be excited about the new television series.
