New 'Star Wars' Trailer Racks Up Big Numbers on Social Media

By    |   Friday, 17 April 2015 11:19 AM EDT

The new trailer for "Star Wars VII: The Force Awakens" has sent social media into hyper drive, as the sneak peak into the latest installment of the science fiction franchise drew more than 19.1 million views on YouTube in less than a day.

Probably most important for "Star Wars" geeks, the trailer dropped some big reveals — including a new Skywalker family member with power of the force, a first look at Harrison Ford's aged Han Solo with Chewbacca, and possibly the new dark-masked villain.

Mark Hamill can also be heard repeating a famous line from "Return of the Jedi," in which he reveals to Carrie Fisher's Princess Leia that they are brother and sister — something many fans took as a hint that he will make the same comment to someone new.

"The force is strong in my family," Hamill is heard saying. "My father has it. I have it. My sister has it. And you have the power, too."

"Perhaps the most iconic image in the new trailer is the scorched visage of Darth Vader's helmet, last seen in a funeral pyre as Luke Skywalker mourned the last-minute redemption of his genocidal Sith father," Entertainment Weekly reported.

The trailer also gives plenty of facetime to Daisy Ridley and John Boyega, who play Rey and Finn, hinting that they will be carrying major roles in the hotly anticipated film, which premieres December 18.

Once the trailer landed on YouTube around 2 p.m. Thursday, "Star Wars" mania was off and running, with the clip getting 37,000 retweets in less than three hours, The Guardian reported. The Facebook video of the trailer quickly logged 3.6 million views and 97,000 likes.

Twitter users appeared to be overwhelmingly positive about the new teaser.
