The White House has a new puppy. But not everyone is happy about it.
The First Family
announced the addition via the White House blog on Monday night. Sunny, like incumbent first pet Bo, is a Portuguese water dog.
“Sunny is the perfect little sister for Bo – full of energy and very affectionate – and the First Family picked her name because it fit her cheerful personality,” states the White House blog. “We suspect Sunny will follow in Bo’s footsteps and keep the President company in the Oval Office, go for walks with the First Family after their 6:30 family dinner and even jump on the First Lady’s lap from time to time!”

But the Obama administration was taking some heat for its timing of the announcement.
“White House response to UK detention of journalist’s partner: “Look, a puppy!” tweeted @KennethLipp.
“Christians murdered all over Egypt, new puppy at White House,” several people tweeted.
“Who cares about #Egypt #Obama got a new puppy,” tweeted @txixmx.
“By the end of Obama’s 8th year, the White House will look like a puppy mill to keep the masses distracted,” tweeted @cactusgroup.
President Obama, however, is hardly the first commander in chief to publicize a new addition to the White House.
The Washington Post’s Wonkblog noted there have been 20 dogs in the White House – and just three cats – going back the past 50 years.
The Presidential Pets Museum, meanwhile, says no recent president can top Theodore Roosevelt. His collection included a number of horses, a lion, a hyena, a wildcat, a coyote, five bears, two parrots, a zebra, a barn owl, and five guinea pigs.
The Obamas reportedly have a passion for Portuguese water dogs because they don’t aggravate the family’s allergies. Bo was given to the family as a gift from the late Sen. Edward Kennedy.
By the way, Wonkblog notes that the average American spends $1,649 on care annually for their pet.
