New York City's No Murders for 11 Days Is New Record

By    |   Friday, 13 February 2015 10:56 AM EST

New York City had no murders for 11 consecutive days as of Friday, a new record.

"Only for the third time in modern history have we had 10 days without a murder," Police Commissioner Bill Bratton said a Thursday night press conference with Mayor Bill de Blasio, reported the New York Daily News.

The new 11-day streak breaks last year's 10-day record set between February 13-22. The most recent murder among the city's 8.4 million people came on Super Bowl Sunday, when a man was shot to death in Harlem around 10:30 p.m. Since then, a number of factors including chillier temperatures have produced a period of calm.

The new record marks a new milestone since city police instituted CompStat, a computerized crime-tracking system, in 1994.

"This extraordinary streak of safety over the past several days is testament to the hard work of the men and women of the NYPD, and further evidence that New York City is the safest big city in America," said Mayor Bill de Blasio, the New York Observer reported.

"It’s also proof we can bring police and the community closer together and keep crime down in our neighborhoods."

The period of calm is likely a political boon for the mayor, who provoked protests from NYPD officers with his personal takes on the Eric Garner chokehold case last year.

De Blasio has also been criticized for ending the city's stop-and-frisk program, which took a number of guns off the street.

Overall, murders are down 85 percent across the five boroughs from 1990, the city's peak year.
