New York is the worst state to in the U.S. to retire, according to a study this month by the financing consultant firm Bankrate, while South Dakota was determined to be the best place.
The Bankrate survey ranked states on seven different categories, including cost of living, crime, culture, health care quality, taxes, weather, and well-being. In its low rating, New York was ranked last in cost of living, 49th in taxes and 41st in health care quality.
New York, though, did score relatively well in at least one category that may surprise some – crime. The survey ranked New York 13th best state for retirees in relation to crime. The state also ranked 13th in culture.
South Dakota was ranked as the best place for retirees, ranking No. 1 in well-being, No. 2 in taxes, No. 10 in culture, No. 12 in health care quality, and No. 19 in cost of living. South Dakota was followed by Utah, Idaho, New Hampshire, and Florida.
Florida, a longtime attraction for retirees because of the weather, was dragged down by its No. 36 ranking for health care quality and No. 33 ranking for crime, according to the survey.
Mississippi was surveyed as the best state in regard to cost of living, New Hampshire for crime, Vermont was the best for culture, Minnesota for quality health care, Hawaii for weather, and Wyoming for taxes, according to Bankrate.
The Bankrate survey came to its conclusions after examining and analyzing data from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, The Council for Community and Economic Research, FBI, Gallup-Sharecare, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Tax Foundation, University of Hawaii at Manoa and Western States Arts Federation, according to Patch.com.
