Nico Bellamy found an allegedly stolen ring this summer, an heirloom that he got back with a little stroke of luck, People magazine reported.
Bellamy, a California pitch consultant, kept the story from his girlfriend, now fiancée Caitie Schlisserman, until a New Year's Eve trip to Paris to propose, according to People. But in July 2017 in a move from West Hollywood to Silver Lake, California, Bellamy panicked that he lost the jewelry, per the magazine.
Stuart Schlisserman, Caitie Schlisserman's father, had entrusted Bellamy with his mother's engagement ring so that Bellamy could give to his daughter when it was time propose. Bellamy told People that he had the ring in a safe deposit box until the move.
Bellamy said to keep the ring near him during the move, he placed it in a small plastic bag and then into a box that he put into his trusty backpack, People wrote.
A week after the move with Stuart Schlisserman coming into town, Bellamy went to find the ring when he discovered that the backpack had been opened and the ring gone.
"When I dumped everything out and realized the ring wasn’t there, I ran to the bathroom and threw up immediately," Bellamy told People. "Not only was it this heirloom that was given to me by her dad to keep safe and I misplaced it, but her father was still recovering from his mother passing away just nine months earlier.
"I started freaking out, and I was running around the house overturning stuff, desperately, because I knew there was no way it could have fallen out somewhere," he continued.
Distraught, he picked up his future father-in-law at the airport and privately broke the news to him away from Caitie Schlisserman, People wrote. Stuart Schlisserman took the news well, but on their way back from the airport, something remarkable happened.
Bellamy told People he took an alternative route home in Silver Lake to dodge traffic and discovered a sign posted on a tree at an intersection near his new home: "Found engagement ring."
"I thought it had to be mine, because it seemed like such a weird coincidence," Bellamy told People. "I hoped it would be, but how could someone have found this thing?"
The couple who found the ring told Bellamy that they found the ring box in a nearby alleyway where his movers had parked last week, People wrote. Bellamy said he believes the movers took the box, but believed it was empty and threw it out, the magazine said.
"This all happened in the span of like two hours," Bellamy said about learning that the ring was missing to retrieving it from the couple who found it, People wrote. "… I went through like every stage of panic, anger, fear and then joy in such a small amount of time. It was the most stressful two hours in my life. And the greatest thing now is it’s on Katie's hand — so if it gets lost again it's her fault."
