Nicole Kidman's strange Oscar clapping was done to protect her bling, the Academy Award-winning actress told an Australian radio station Thursday.
Kidman was the subject of ridicule on social media and talk shows when cameras caught her clapping like a seal during the Academy Awards on Feb. 26. But she told the "Kyle & Jackie O" show on KIIS Radio in Sydney that she was trying to protect an expensive ring she was wearing.
"I'm so glad you clarified that because it was really awkward," Kidman said after one of the talk show host asked her about clapping with the rings. "I was like gosh, I want to clap, I don't want to not be clapping, which would be worse, right? 'Why isn't Nicole clapping?'
"So therefore I'm clapping bit it was really difficult because I had a huge ring on that was not my own, but it was absolutely gorgeous, and I was terrified of damaging it. … It's like, is there not more important things to be focused on than the 'seal clap?'" Kidman continued.
The Press Association reported that Kidman was wearing 119 carats worth of Harry Winston diamonds at the Oscars, which included a cluster diamond ring.
She won an Academy Award in 2003 for actress in a lead role for the movie "The Hours." She was nominated for best actress in a supporting role this year for the movie "Lion."
Social media was brutal in making fun of Kidman's clapping during the awards show.
