A blistering heat wave left the Northeast United States sweltering, while 1,500 New York households suffered without power for a short time Monday and people in Maryland and the Washington, D.C., area went without water.
NBC News reported that a mostly red weather map, which encompassed even the Pacific Northwest and the Mountain states, might mean that high-heat records could be broken every day this week, according to Weather Channel meteorologist Kevin Roth.

Add in humidity and the Northeast will feel like it is 105 degrees outside, Roth told NBC. Unusually hot temps are expected to continue throughout the week.
The Chicago Tribune reported that utility companies and grid operators in the Northeast said they had enough power to keep things cooled down in these first days of the heat wave.
Power companies asked consumers to cut back their power usage if at all possible and activated programs designed to reduce energy use in some areas, the Tribune said. A power grid operator in New England told The Associated Press that electricity demand could get close to a 7-year-old record amount set in August 2006.
NBC News said Prince George’s County, Md., had a water main fail, leaving the area around D.C. without water for a few days.
Heat advisories went out for various parts of the Northeast, including Washington, D.C., and Arlington, Alexandria, and Falls Church, Va., NBC said.
NBC reported that Roth attributed the heat wave to a “dome of high pressure” in the Ohio Valley. Winds aren’t moving it along, but a cold front later this week could move the hot air on out, the meteorologist said.
Next week, temperatures should get back to average, Roth reported.
ABC News reported that New York City has about 425 cooling centers open throughout the city to help people struggling with the heat. New Yorkers should use caution if attending tonight’s scheduled MLB All-Star Game, the city’s government officials warned.
