A Michigan gas station worker was fired after leaving a note to his tardy boss when she failed to show up on time to relieve him of his shift.

Joe Blumm of Grand Rapids was eager to finish his graveyard shift at a BP gas station Thursday when his boss neglected to show up for over an hour. Fed up, he left a note, locked the door, and walked away.

A customer saw the note and posted it to Reddit, where it quickly went viral under the headline "This is how you quit your s— third shift gas station job."

"I know I struck a chord with a lot of disgruntled, low-paid employees who get the short end of the stick," Blumm told Fox 17 of West Michigan. said. "I had enough of that unprofessional atmosphere, having to deal with that tardiness and have it come down on me."

Blumm says he never expected attention for the note, but he hopes it might help him find a better job that pays more after he was fired on Friday.

In full, the note read: "Hey boss, learn to be on time or at least communicate when you are going to be late. One hour with no phone call is unacceptable. As you can see, the doors are locked. I went home. Fire me if you must, but realize I walked due to your negligence."

Reporters spoke with the boss, who confirmed her tardiness. She said she fired Blumm because he never called her or another employee before walking off the job.

"I was at my breaking point," the 27-year-old Blumm explained to The Grand Rapids Press Saturday.

Joe Niewiek, owner of Sunoco gas station in Cutlerville, has already offered Blumm a new job, MLive reported. "I assume by his note (Joe) seems to be a down-to-earth, realistic person," Niewiek said.
