Instead of hot dogs, barbecued chicken, and cocktails on the deck, some residents in New York and New England were thinking snowshoes and shovels this Memorial Day weekend when the skies opened up and dumped 3 feet of snow on them.
Locals posted their pictures of the snowfall online at Syracuse.com.
Whiteface Mountain, up the road from Lake Placid, N.Y, received three feet of snow over the weekend, forcing the closure of part of the Whiteface Veteran’s Memorial Highway. The highway, which features spectacular panoramic views, has a vertical climb of 2,300 feet in five miles; at the summit, there’s a castle. The road to the summit was dedicated by Gov. Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1929, and opened in 1936.
The Highway will ‘hopefully’ reopen Tuesday, according to the Mountain’s website.

Across the rest of the region, Mount Mansfield, in Stowe, Vt., got 13.2 inches on Sunday alone. Northern New Hampshire was also hit by the snowstorm.
The snow line in the Adirondacks of New York, and the mountains of northern Vermont and northern New Hampshire began at elevations of 1,500 feet and higher. The heavy, wet snow caused tree damage and power outages in the region.
According to Weather Underground,
you would have to go back to the Year Without Summer, in 1816, to find comparable temperatures. Major volcanic eruptions in Indonesia, culminating in the eruption of Mount Tambora April 5-15, 1815, sent so much ash and debris into the atmosphere that catastrophic crop failures occurred across New York, New England, and Canada, and northern Europe.
Whiteface Mountain, located just a few miles from Lake Placid, N.Y., is known among skiers for its sheer vertical drop and extensive trail system. It hosted the Olympic Winter Games in 1932 and 1980, and yet remains a favorite among families due to the extensive off-hill activities available. This Memorial Day weekend, snowshoeing rather than hiking was the go-to sport.
