In a series of tweets, innovator Elon Musk claimed an NYC-to-DC hyperloop underground that would making the trip in only 29 minutes has gotten verbal approval from the government.
Musk, who owns both Tesla and SpaceX and co-founded PayPal, tweeted Thursday that The Boring Company had gotten the go-ahead to build the tunnel for the project, which would go from New York to Philadelphia, Baltimore, and Washington, D.C.
The New York City mayor’s office and D.C. and Pennsylvania Departments of Transportation all told ABC News they were unaware of any projects with Musk, however.
“We have had promising conversations to date, are committed to transformative infrastructure projects, and believe our greatest solutions have often come from the ingenuity and drive of the private sector,” a White House spokesperson said, ABC News reported.
Musk has broken ground on a Los Angeles tunnel that will house a Hyperloop and also plans one for Texas, according to ABC News.
A later tweet said there was more work needed to get formal approval.
The hyperloop concept involves a pod traveling at speeds of about 800 miles per hour through a pneumatic tunnel. Although industry experts called the costs to complete such a project “incomprehensible,” USA Today reported, Musk seems determined to get it up and running.
Musk’s proposed NYC-to-DC hyperloop would travel from city center to city center and offer up to a dozen entry and exit tunnels in each city, according to another Musk tweet.
