Three NYPD officers bought winter gloves for a group of kids after the children ambushed them with snowballs while they were on patrol.
Brooklyn detective Kaz Daughtry and officers John Dorrejo and Richard Russo came upon a group of seven or eight kids during Wednesday’s nor’easter and decided to join into the fight, Inside Edition reported.
“We just want to have fun with them and let them know we are here to have fun with them,” Russo said. “It’s a snow day. If you want to have a snowball fight, don’t be afraid to throw a snowball fight.” The kids won handily, even though they weren’t really equipped for the battle.
“We noticed one of the kids had blue plastic surgical gloves,” Daughtry told IE. “We got out of the car and we asked them, ‘Where are your gloves at?’ and the kid said they didn’t have any.” Other kids were using socks over their hands.
So the officers went to a nearby store and bought gloves for all the kids, IE reported.
“The kids were happy — the mom was grateful,” Russo said. “It was priceless. They were all so happy.”
The NYPD wants to encourage kids to have positive relationships with police.
The police took video of the snowball fight and the moment when the kids got their gloves, and the Facebook video went viral, with more than 175,000 views since it was posted.
The police went back to the house on Thursday with toys and more winter gear for the kids. One of the children, Amir Massey, said, “In return, I’ll give all you guys some coffee and donuts!” NBC New York reported.
Daughtry also said one of the kids told him “I just want to be like you guys” after the fun.
“To come to work for the greatest police department and have fun on a snow day is priceless,” he told IE.
