The NYPD's new Twitter campaign backfired royally this week as the city's denizens of justice took the opportunity to post photos of police brutality.
It started Tuesday when the New York Police Department posted a message encouraging people to post photos of themselves with officers and the hashtag #myNYPD.
But what seemed like an innocent request quickly turned into major controversy as people began flooding Twitter with images of police brutality complete with snarky captions.
Not all the #myNYPD tweets were negative.
There's been no comment so far on the botched
Twitter campaign, but an NYPD spokesperson defended it to CNN this week.
"The NYPD is creating new ways to communicate effectively with the community. Twitter provides an open forum for an uncensored exchange and this is an open dialogue good for our city," Deputy Chief Kim Y. Royster said.
