Oberlin College Cancels Classes after Person in KKK Regalia Spotted

By    |   Monday, 04 March 2013 03:25 PM EST

Classes were cancelled at Oberlin College Monday, after a person was spotted on campus wearing a KKK hood and robe, according to a statement released by the school. The report was the latest in a string of hate-related incidents on the Oberlin, Ohio campus.

"This report is being investigated by both Safety and Security and the Oberlin Police Department," read a statement posted on the school's website Monday. "This event, in addition to the series of other hate-related incidents on campus, has precipitated our decision to suspend formal classes and all non-essential activities for today, Monday, March 4, 2013, and gather for a series of discussions of the challenging issues that have faced our community in recent weeks."

Last week, a swastika and graffiti were reported on the walls of Oberlin's Conservatory of Music. Other anti-Semitic, racist, and homophobic slurs were also reportedly seen on campus earlier last month.

"It is important for the campus to pause to indicate its support for its student, faculty and staff who have been subject to various instances of hate," College President Marvin Krislov told Cleveland's Jewish News.

Instead of classes, the school has planned a series of discussion panels, including a "We Stand Together" convocation.

"We hope today will allow the entire community—students, faculty, and staff—to make a strong statement about the values that we cherish here at Oberlin: inclusion, respect for others, and a strong and abiding faith in the worth of every individual," the school's statement r. "Indeed, the strength of Oberlin comes from our belief that diversity and openness enriches us all, and enhances the educational mission at its core."
