Ohio Judge's Wife in Jail, Accused of Poisoning Him With Antifreeze

By    |   Thursday, 05 December 2013 06:11 PM EST

An Ohio judge who was being poisoned with antifreeze is recovering at home while his wife of 45 years is in jail, charged with the crime.

Carla Rae Hague, 71, is charged with felonious assault in the poisoning of her husband, Judge Charles Hague, and will probably be charged with attempted murder, ABC News reported.

WKYC said that bond for Hague was set at $100,000 during a Thursday afternoon hearing. Hague did not attend the hearing.

Judge Hague was taken to the hospital in mid-September and tests eventually found high levels of antifreeze in his body, ABC said. Hague, a retired nurse, was arrested Monday right before her 71st birthday. The Hague family has not made a comment on the case and asked for privacy.

Judge Hague has sat on the Common Pleas Juvenile/Probate Court bench for 20 years in Ashtabula County, Ohio.

“We investigate these kind of crimes the same no matter who it is,” Sheriff William Johnson told the Star Beacon. “This is a noteworthy case because he is a sitting judge.”

A woman who campaigned for Judge Hague told the Star Beacon, “They’re wonderful people. I can’t believe it.”

Police officials are making sure that the case is being handled carefully to prevent any conflict of interest issues because of the judge’s position, ABC said.

“The fact that he’s a sitting judge is going to make national news, and we know that,” Johnson told ABC.
