Restaurants come and go but some get lucky, like these seven establishments that are reported to be the oldest in America, according to 24/7 Wall Street:

7. Old Homestead

  • Location: New York City
  • Year opened: 1868

Old Homestead was forged from humble beginnings. It started out as a tiny restaurant but later expanded into a much larger steakhouse. A longtime employee took over ownership in 1940 and his grandsons still operate it today.

6. Scholz Garten

  • Location: Austin, Texas
  • Year opened: 1866

German immigrant August Scholz opened this beer garden and eatery at the end of the Civil War. In 1914, German choral society Saengerrunde took over and today retains ownership, although three Austin businessmen have been leasing it for over 30 years.

5. The Old Clam House

  • Location: San Francisco, California
  • Year opened: 1861

The Old Clam House has changed its location several times but it remains one of San Francisco's oldest restaurants. It was initially run by Ambrose Zurfluh and his wife Anna Imhof Zwyssig. Jerry Dal Bozzo and his wife Jennifer have been in charge since 2011.

4. Hays House

  • Location: Council Grove, Kansas
  • Year opened: 1857

The man behind Hays House was Seth Hays, who opened it as a food-serving tavern and trading post. The venue also housed a barbershop and post office. It was restored three times after severe fire damage and faced permanent closure in 2011, but a group of residents banded together and bought the establishment and reopened it.

3. Breitbach's Country Dining

  • Location: Balltown, Iowa
  • Year opened: 1852

The establishment was first opened as a stagecoach stop. Ten years after being founded, the Breitbach family bought it and the restaurant is still owned by their descendants.

2. Tadich Grill

  • Location: San Francisco
  • Year opened: 1849

Initially opened as a tent called Coffee Stand during the Gold Rush, the eatery moved and changed names several times before officially becoming Tadich Grill in 1887, when John Tadich took over. John Buich bought the restaurant in 1928 and his family continues to run it today.

1. Antoine's

  • Location: New Orleans, Louisiana
  • Year opened: 1840

An 18-year-old immigrant from France, Antoine Aciatore, opened this restaurant with his wife Julie. Their son Jules eventually took over, and then his son Roy took the reins until 1972. His grandson Rick Blount eventually became CEO and proprietor in 2005.
