Oprah Winfrey Yard Sale From 4 of Her Homes Raises $600K

By    |   Monday, 04 November 2013 07:12 AM EST

Oprah Winfrey hosted an epic yard sale over the weekend, auctioning off more than $600,000 worth of antiques, art, and contemporary furnishings from the media mogul's homes in Indiana, Hawaii, Chicago, and Santa Barbara.

The sale, which was held Saturday at the Santa Barbara Polo & Racquet Club in Carpinteria, Calif., drew huge bids, much higher than initial, pre-auction estimates. All proceeds were donated to the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy Foundation College Fund, which benefits graduates of Winfrey's South African school.

"I'm trying not to be attached to things," Winfrey told ETonline.com of the process of deciding what to put up for sale. "But it's hard."

A 16-by-20-inch print of a TV Guide cover photo featuring Winfrey was estimated to draw a bid of $200 to $400 but ended up selling for $3,000.

A pair of crystal lamp bases with no shades was thought to sell for $200 to $400 but went for $2,500.

A pair of canvas banners promoting Winfrey's 1985 film "The Color Purple" yielded winning bids of $4,100 and $6,000, while a set of six 18th century Louis XVI armchairs with hand-embroidered details drew a winning bid of $60,000.

Though more than 250 of the 584 items up for sale were still left at the end of the day, proceeds exceeded $600,000.
