A new Oregon gas pumping law allowing residents to operate self-serve pumps has drawn the ire of some residents and gas stations that appear to be balking at the change.
The new law, which was signed by Gov. Kate Brown last June, took effect Monday, allowing self-service gas pumps, but some gas stations said they will continue to pump gas for customers, according to The Bend Bulletin.
"Honestly, I don't think we’re going to make a change," cashier Shelby Perkins at the 76 station in Prineville, Oregon, told the Bulletin. "Our regular, longtime customers love coming here and talking to us while we pump their gas."
The new law leaves New Jersey as the only state in the country that requires an attendant to pump gas for customers, The Bulletin stated.
When Medford, Oregon, television station KTVL-TV asked residents to weigh in about the law on their Facebook page, the post went viral with more than 52,000 comments.
"I don't even know how to pump gas and I am 62, native Oregonian," said Sandy Franklin on Facebook. "I say NO THANKS! I don't want to smell like gasoline."
"I've lived in this state all my life and I REFUSE to pump my own gas," Mike Perrone, another Facebook user, posted. "I had to do it once in California while visiting my brother and almost died doing it. This a service only qualified people should perform."
Many on social media appear to have taken a humorous look at the "controversy" of pumping your own gas in Oregon.
