The Oregon Ducks won't wear their green and yellow uniforms for their College Football Playoff National Championship game against Ohio State, riling up fans who want to see their team in their traditional colors.
Nike, whose founder, Phil Knight, is also the Ducks' biggest booster, unveiled the uniforms for the Jan. 12 title game, and they don't include Oregon's school colors. The Ducks will instead wear white away jerseys with wings on the shoulder and the Fighting Ducks logo on the sleeves. Both of those will be silver.
Oregon will also wear white helmets with gray pants.
Ohio will wear scarlet home jerseys with gray stripes down the sleeves and black numbers on the shoulders. An homage to the school's championship team in 1968, the jerseys were unveiled last month by Nike, but weren’t worn during the Buckeyes' win over Alabama.
Oregon fans were incensed by the uniforms.
Poster "TDB" wrote on oregonlive.com: "WOW this is a joke???? They look like Ohio State on the road. Disgusting!!!! Give us Green & Yellow!!!!!"
The web site, rantsports.com, was insulted for the school.
"To not include any school colors on the new uniforms is a complete slap in the face to everything that the University of Oregon stands for,"
wrote Alex Drude for Rantsports.com. "The university is the reason the football team exists. The university is the reason Nike exists, because founder Phil Knight is an Oregon alum and helped start the company with Oregon track coach Bill Bowerman. ... The school's official colors have been green and yellow since the 1890s. Over the past decade there have been a lot of different Oregon uniform combinations, but I can't remember a single one that doesn't have any school colors."
