An Oscar Pistorius suicide attempt is being denied although the imprisoned former Olympian was hospitalized after being treated for "bad cuts" on his wrists and blades were reportedly found in his cell.
Kgosi Mapuru II Correctional Centre confirmed that Pistorius was treated for the injuries and transported to a hospital for additional treatment before being returned to the prison, reported eNews Channel Africa
Security guards at Pretonria's Kalafong Hospital said Pistorius was admitted to the hospital about 12:30 a.m. Saturday. The former Paralympics star and 2012 London Olympics runner said he injured himself after falling out of bed, according to the correctional services.
South Africa-based City Press reported an inmate saying "Pistorius had injured himself intentionally," while two wardens with knowledge of the prison's hospital section said that blades were found in his cell.
The City Paper said a security guard at Kalafong Hospital added: "He had bad cuts on his wrists and the doctors kept wrapping bandages around them."
Singabakho Nxumalo, a correctional services spokesman said, Pistorius was treated at the hospital for minor injuries to his wrists and returned to prison on Saturday, according to The Independent.
"Oscar Pistorius denied speculations of a suicide attempt. As a policy principle, we cannot further discuss a particular offender's personal condition in the public domain," Manelisi Wolela, a spokesman at the Department of Correctional Services, told Reuters.
Carl Pistorius, the athlete's brother, claimed on Twitter that Pistorius's injuries didn't come from a suicide attempt.
Pistorius, a double amputee, made history as the first person with such a disability to run in the Summer Olympic Games with specially-made blade-like prosthetics that earned him the nickname "The Blade Runner." He reached the semifinals of London 2012 Olympic in the 400-meter run before winning gold medals at the Paralympics noted Reuters.
Pistorius shot girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp through a toilet cubicle door at his home in the pre-dawn hours of Valentine's Day2013, but claimed he thought an intruder was hiding there, said The Associated Press.
He was sentenced on July 6 to 15 years in prison for her murder, making him eligible for parole after three years, said The AP. South African prosecutors said they plan to appeal the sentence, charging that it was too lenient, noted the news agency.
