Overpaid Actors: Adam Sandler Tops Forbes' 2013 List

Adam Sandler tops Forbes' most overpaid actors list for 2013.

The list, which is compiled annually, compares the amount of money the studio pays the actor to the revenue that actor brings in from the film or films he or she appears in.

"We calculated a return on investment number for each star and then averaged those numbers to get an overall return," Forbes said.

The former "Saturday Night Live" funnyman demands an upfront paycheck of $15 million for each film and earned $3.40 for every $1 he was paid for his acting in 2013.

One of the issues Forbes pointed out with Sandler and other actors who made the list was their demand to be paid upfront for their work. No matter how the film does in the box office, the studio is forced to pay what was agreed on in the contract.

"One has to wonder if it’s worth continuing to pay Sandler’s huge upfront fees in the hopes that his next film will be a hit when it seems audiences might be getting tired of Sandler’s shtick," Forbes' Dorothy Pomerantz wrote. "Don’t be surprised if studios start asking him to take less upfront in favor of a heftier chunk of the back end if the film is a hit, or if the actor starts trying to do more animated work."

Sandler was followed on the list by Katherine Heigl, who earned $3.50 for every $1 she was paid in her films. Reese Witherspoon came in third on Forbes' most overpaid actors list, earning $3.90 for every $1 she is paid. Nicolas Cage and Kevin James rounded out the Top 5, earning $6 and $6.10 for each dollar they were paid, respectively.

Denzel Washington, Steve Carell, Jennifer Aniston, Matt Damon, and Ryan Reynolds were also named on the list.
