Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo has said she intends to sue Fox News after the network suggested there are areas of the city considered “no-go zones” for non-Muslims.
"When we're insulted, and when we've had an image, then I think we'll have to sue, I think we'll have to go to court, in order to have these words removed,"
Hidalgo told CNN. "The image of Paris has been prejudiced, and the honor of Paris has been prejudiced."
Fox News reports suggested there are areas of Paris and other European cities where non-Muslims fear entering, police are afraid to work, and Islamic law is practiced. The network also displayed a map of such “no-go zones.” The reports came as the city is grappling with the aftermath of the Charlie Hebdo terrorist attack.
Fox News also has drawn criticism for airing comments by author Steven Emerson, who called the British city of Birmingham “totally Muslim” and said non-Muslims don’t go there.
The network has apologized repeatedly for errors in its segments about Muslims in Europe.
Fox News called Hidalgo’s threat of a lawsuit “misplaced,” Newsweek reported.
The network has been widely made fun of for its coverage, including being the subject of a segment on French satirical TV show "La Petit Journal" and a Twitter hashtag #FoxNewsFacts.
Twitter users had mixed reactions.
