A Parkland student has surpassed the National Rifle Association (NRA) on Twitter, with Emma Gonzalez drawing more followers than the association she opposes.

The Majory Stoneman Douglas High School mass shooting survivor is fast making herself known as a driving force behind a renewed movement calling for gun violence prevention.

The 18-year-old delivered a powerful speech at an anti-gun rally in Fort Lauderdale two days after the Florida massacre that saw 17 students and school employees killed, People magazine noted.

She drew widespread attention at a CNN town hall after putting heat on NRA spokeswoman, Dana Loesch, and questioning the association's stance on banning the purchase of semi-automatic and fully automatic weapons.

This weekend Gonzalez officially amassed more followers than the NRA.

After joining the social media site last week, she had gained over 955,000 followers, compared to the NRA's 584,000 followers it had cultivated since 2009, USA Today reported.

Speaking to People magazine about her campaign, Gonzalez said there was a sense of urgency in making her voice heard.

"[I'm racing against] people forgetting, the momentum slowing down," she said. "I can only pray nothing happens right now that could distract the nation from paying attention to this. We were very close to being swept under the carpet and we did not let that happen."

The teen has not been afraid of challenging politicians and has singled out President Donald Trump, who accepted millions from the NRA for his campaign.

"If you don't do anything to prevent this from continuing to occur, that number of gunshot victims will go up and the number that they are worth will go down," she said, per USA Today. "…We will be worthless to you."
