Patty Jenkins responded to James Cameron in a strongly-worded tweet Thursday, taking the award-winning "Avatar" director to task for slamming "Wonder Woman," which she directed.
In an interview with The Guardian this week, the Academy Award-winning director slammed "Wonder Woman," one of the top-grossing films of the year, calling it a "step backwards" for superhero movies, comparing the role with his Sarah Connor character in his "Terminator" movie franchise.
"All of the self-congratulatory back-patting Hollywood's been doing over 'Wonder Woman' has been so misguided," Cameron told The Guardian. "She's an objectified icon, and it's just male Hollywood doing the same old thing! I'm not saying I didn't like the movie but, to me, it's a step backwards."
"Sarah Connor was not a beauty icon. She was strong, she was troubled, she was a terrible mother, and she earned the respect of the audience through pure grit. And to me, (the benefit of characters like Sarah) is so obvious. I mean, half the audience is female," Cameron continued.
Jenkins, whose "Wonder Woman" has raked in $404.4 million domestically and another $396.1 million overseas, according to Box Office Mojo.com, clapped back with a tweet Thursday night, saying that women have the right to choose their own icons.
Jenkins directed the 2003 movie "Monster" that won Charlize Theron the Oscar for best actress in her portrayal of serial killer Aileen Wuornos.
Fans registered their complaints to Cameron's words on social media.
