Paul Reubens announced Wednesday on "The Tonight Show" that a new Pee-wee Herman movie is in the works.

Bantering with Jimmy Fallon, who told Reubens his work was highly influential on him, the host coaxed the revelation out of his guest ever so gently.

"Is there gonna be another Pee-wee movie?" asked Fallon, pleadingly.

"There is going to be one," Reubens said gently. "I was hoping I could make this huge announcement tonight, but it's a week away, I think, from being announced."

Reubens reminded the audience that the movie's development with producer Judd Apatow was announced a couple of years ago. He confirmed Wednesday that comedian Paul Rust of Arrested Development fame would be co-writing the new adventure, and also said a director had been nailed down — but didn't give a name.

Fallon and Reubens discussed how the Pee-wee character was developed over a number of years.

Working with Los Angeles improv group The Groundlings, Reubens said he originally tried to create a stand-up comedian character who could never remember his punch lines, and ended up with the strange but loveable Pee-wee.

According to People magazine, "An HBO special starring the character was released in 1981, followed by 'Pee-wee's Big Adventure,' the Tim Burton-directed film, in 1985. 'Pee-wee's Playhouse,' the beloved children's show, debuted a year later, while 'Big Top Pee-wee' hit theaters in 1988."
