Paul Reubens' comeback movie goes into production in March, courtesy of Netflix which will distribute "Pee-wee's Big Holiday" starring Reubens in the character he created.

Judd Apatow and Reubens are producing "Pee-wee's Big Holiday," which was written by the actor and Paul Rust and directed by John Lee, according to a statement from Reubens on Tuesday.

"We didn't hesitate for a moment knowing that 'Pee-wee's Big Holiday' was such a passion project for Paul and Judd and we are delighted by the opportunity to introduce such a beloved character to a new generation," Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos said on the actor's website. "We are thrilled to bring our viewers around the world the wonder of Pee-wee Herman."

Reubens said he and Apatow pondered the idea for the movie for four years and with the emergence of Netflix as a content provider, as well as a distributor, added to the possibilities of making the movie a reality.

Apatow has produced such comedy hits as "The 40-Year-Old Virgin," "Bridesmaids," "Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy" and HBO's "Girls."

"As a fan of Pee-wee Herman since he first appeared on 'The Dating Game,' I am thrilled to have the opportunity to work with the brilliant Paul Reubens on this film," Apatow said. "It is a dream come true."

Reubens, 62, created his Pee-wee Herman persona in Los Angeles in the improv group The Groundlings in the 1980s, according to Variety. The act caught on in popularity and Reubens developed the "The Pee-wee Herman Show" at the improv and then later for HBO.

From there, Reubens moved to CBS to do the children's show "Pee-wee's Playhouse" for five years and he starred in the movie "Pee-wee's Big Adventure" in 1985.

Reubens' career took a hit in 1991 when he was arrested for indecent exposure at a Florida movie theater, reported Variety. He bounced back to appear in various film and television roles, including "30 Rock," "Pushing Daisies," "Reno 911," "Everybody Loves Raymond," "Murphy Brown" and NBC's "The Blacklist."

His film credits include "Mystery Men," "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," "Blow," "Nailed," and "Life During Wartime."
