The zombie apocalypse has been a staple of the American zeitgeist for decades, and it was recently discovered that the Pentagon has a plan to deal with such an event.
Foreign Policy magazine recently obtained an unclassified document from the Defense Department's computer network called "CONOP 8888" dated April 30, 2011. The plan, titled "Counter-Zombie Dominance," specifically states it "was not actually designed as a joke."
The document's summary says the report "fulfills fictional contingency planning . . . to undertake military operations to preserve 'non-zombie' humans from the threats posed by a zombie horde."

It goes on to say, "Because zombies pose a threat to all non-zombie human life, [U.S. Strategic Command] will be prepared to preserve the sanctity of human life and conduct operations in support of any human population — including traditional adversaries."
Navy Capt. Pamela Kunzea, a spokeswoman for Strategic Command, confirmed the document's existence, but stated firmly that it was created for training purposes only, and is not an actual strategic plan.
"The document is identified as a training tool used in an in-house training exercise where students learn about the basic concepts of military plans and order development through a fictional training scenario . . . This document is not a U.S. Strategic Command plan," she stated in an email.
Reading through the document more thoroughly, some of the scenarios imagined do get somewhat outlandish — such as the section on "magic zombies."
The document's "Zombie Threat Summary" runs through a number of potential zombie types, including vegetarian zombies that pose no threat to human life because the zombies eat plants, chicken zombies, and evil magic zombies "created via some form of occult experimentation in what might otherwise be referred to as 'evil magic.'"
Also among the zombie types are zombies from outer space, Frankenstein's monster-like zombies created by bio-engineers, and the classic, pathogen-induced flesh-eating zombies.
