Pearce Tefft, the father of Pete Tefft, who attended the Charlottesville rally and blamed counter-protesters for the violence, has denounced his son in a letter to a Fargo newspaper and said Pete was no longer welcome at family gatherings and did not learn his views at home.
Peter (Pete) Tefft posted about the Unite the Right rally on Facebook afterward and blamed the counter-protesters for the violence and defended his “alt-right,” “pro-white” views.
Pearce Tefft wrote in his letter to The Forum that his son was causing the family “heartbreak and distress.”
“I pray my prodigal son will renounce his hateful beliefs and return home,” he wrote. “Then and only then will I lay out the feast.”
“We do not, never have, and never will, accept his twisted worldview,” the letter continued.
Pete Tefft’s nephew Jacob Scott also called him a “maniac” who “scares us all,” The Forum reported. Scott also said people had harassed his family bcause of Pete's connection to the white nationalist rally.
Scott said his family members are “all bleeding-heart liberals who believe in the fundamental equality of all human beings.”
He added that Peter Tefft’s sister had been threatened at work and that his young cousin had been threateningly messaged online by a stranger, The Forum reported.
“Please son, renounce the hate, accept and love all,” Pearce Tefft’s letter ended.
Twitter praised the father for his courage and said it was the right thing to do.
