At least 20 people were injured in a pile-up as dozens of vehicles were involved in a series of wrecks on Sunday evening that temporarily shut down part of Interstate 40 in central North Carolina.

North Carolina Highway Patrol spokesman Jordan Pack told The News & Observer of Raleigh that more than 100 vehicles were involved in the crashes in Alamance County.

Pack said there were 20 minor injuries but no fatalities, reported The Associated Press. He said it wasn't clear what caused the initial pile-up.

Authorities told WRAL-TV the wet roadway and rubbernecking may have been factors.

The North Carolina Department of Transportation said I-40 West/I-85 South reopened around 11:15 p.m.
