At least 27 people were killed in a horrific traffic accident at an intersection in Pinetown, South Africa, when an 18-wheeler careened through a red light and smashed into four minibus taxis and two cars.
Bodies were reportedly strewn across the road after the truck slammed into the line of vehicles (video below) in a crash that injured at least 60 others on Thursday in the small city just inland from Durbin.
"Two of the taxis had their roofs and sides completely ripped off,"
reporter Gio Stolley told IOL News. "Bystanders were helping paramedics by holding drip bags; there were bags and clothes and shoes everywhere."

KwaZulu-Natal Road Traffic Inspectorate spokeswoman Zinhle Mngomezulu said at a press briefing Thursday that the accident occurred because the truck's brakes failed.
Still, the driver of the truck was arrested and charged with culpable homicide and reckless and negligent driving.
"The details of the accident are still being investigated, so we cannot draw any conclusions at this stage," KwaZulu-Natal Police Col. Vincent Mdunge told IOL.com.
Gregory Govender, whose company Sagekal Logistics owns the truck responsible for the Pinetown accident, reportedly said he couldn’t sleep after hearing about the deadly crash.
News of the tragedy also shook Twitter users, who logged on to mourn the losses.
