A massive fire sparked by a pipeline explosion in rural northwestern Oklahoma Tuesday has been extinguished.

A section of the natural gas pipeline, owned by Northern Natural Gas Co., exploded Tuesday night in Harper County, about 150 miles northwest of Oklahoma City, Reuters reported. It's not yet clear what caused the explosion, but an investigation has been launched.

The explosion reportedly sent flames into the sky two football fields high, which could be seen some 50 miles away, according to CBS News

"The fire has been extinguished," a spokesman for Northern Natural Gas said in a statement Wednesday morning. "We isolated that section of the line and let the gas burn down."

The company said the gas had been immediately rerouted, and there were no interruptions to delivery.

The pipeline runs from Texas to the Upper Midwest.
