A Michigan woman said she was kicked out of Planet Fitness because she complained about a transgender member who looked like a man using the same locker room as her.
Planet Fitness in Midland told
WNEM-TV it canceled Yvette Cormier's membership because her behavior made other members uncomfortable.
Cormier told the television station she was "shocked" to find a transgender person in the locker room with her several days ago while she was getting undressed. She said she complained to management and then Planet Fitness's corporate offices.
"I was stunned and shocked," said Cormier. "He looked like a man. He did not look like a woman. This is very unprofessional. This is very scary. (Planet Fitness) told me the same thing, that he was allowed in there because that's the sex he wants to be."
Planet Fitness, which markets itself as a "judgment free zone," told WNEW-TV that Cormier's concerns about its gender identity policy became disruptive and inappropriate when she started complaining to other gym members.
"Planet Fitness is committed to creating a non-intimidating, welcoming environment for our members," the fitness company said in a statement to the television station. "Our gender identity non-discrimination policy states that members and guests may use all gym facilities based on their sincere self-reported gender identity.
"In expressing her concerns about the policy, the member in question exhibited behavior that club management deemed inappropriate and disruptive to other members, which is a violation of the membership agreement and as a result her membership was canceled," said Planet Fitness.
Alison Gill, senior legislative counsel for the Human Rights Campaign in Washington, D.C., told the
Saginaw News that Planet Fitness was within its rights to welcome transgender men and women into the locker rooms of their gender identity.
Cormier told the News that Planet Fitness could have provided a third locker room for transgender people and did not take everyone's feeling into account.
"I feel it's kind of one sided," Cormier told the newspaper. "I feel like I am the one who is being punished."
