A police officer was killed near Memphis over the weekend, marking the second cop shooting in three months in the area.
Terence Olridge, who was off-duty, was shot and killed near his home in Cordova, Tennessee, on Sunday. The 31-year-old reportedly engaged with a neighbor over a domestic violence dispute, and the neighbor is believed to have opened fire,
The Commercial Appeal reported.
One person is in custody, according to the newspaper.
The shooting was tough news for a community still reeling from the August killing of Officer Sean Bolton, who was shot during a traffic stop. Suspect Tremaine Wilbourn was arrested and charged with first-degree murder in the Bolton case.
"It wasn't very long ago that I stood in very close proximity to where I am standing now, and said something very, very similar to what I'm saying here," Memphis Police Director Toney Armstrong said Sunday at a news conference. "It just doesn't get any easier. I didn't think that we'd be here again so soon."
Jerry Kelly, Olridge's uncle, told WREG-TV that his nephew was in his police uniform about to leave for work when she was shot several times.
"He made his way back to the door some kind of way," he said, adding that he got the attention of his pregnant fiancée by banging on the garage. "He was a father-to-be, but it's something now. Somebody took his life."
"It's a very sad situation," he continued. "Crying, everybody's crying. We just got a call. Told us that he's been shot. Terence was a good person."
Authorities told WHBQ-TV that the name of suspect will not be released until charges are filed. Shelby County Mayor Mark Lutrell also addressed Olridge's death in a statement.
"All of us at Shelby County government express our sympathy about the tragic death of Officer Terence Olridge," he said. "We are keeping his family and fellow officers with the Memphis Police Department in our thoughts and prayers."
The Commercial Appeal reported that Olridge joined the Memphis police force on Sept. 22, 2014.
