Pomona Shootings: Police Believe String of Murders Are Unrelated

By    |   Tuesday, 13 August 2013 09:04 AM EDT

Authorities believe that the string of shootings that left three dead over the weekend in Pomona, 30 miles east of Los Angeles, were unrelated, according to KTLA-TV.

Police said that Jose Cerda, 45, died at the scene after a vehicle drove alongside him and opened fire while Cerda was riding his bike about 9:30 p.m. Saturday.

In another incident, Isais Garcia Lopez, 24, and an 18-year-old whom police did not identify were walking in an alley when a gunman opened fire on them. Both men were shot repeatedly, and Lopez died in the alley. The young man managed to run a short distance to a nearby courtyard before collapsing. Emergency personnel transported the victim by airlift to a hospital, where he underwent emergency surgery.

In a third shooting around 2:50 a.m. Sunday, Angel Bravo, 29, died in front of his home when someone in a vehicle opened fire on him. Authorities said Bravo was about to get into his car and go to the store when he was shot to death.

"I was in bed and I heard two shots," Reanne Sanchez, Bravo’s neighbor, told KTLA-TV. "I immediately jumped up to check on my daughter, and then I heard about four more shots. I could hear some screaming, so I came out here to see what was going on, and that’s when I saw my neighbor on the floor. It didn’t look like he was doing too well."

Police told KCBS-TV that an unidentified man suffered gunshot wounds in another shooting at 1:57 Sunday. Officers found the man after gunshots were reported in the area, and they found shell casings in and around the street, along with two vehicles that had been struck.

Authorities said they are looking for information in all the shootings and have no suspects as of Tuesday.

Pomona faced another string of unrelated shootings within a week in March that left four men dead.
