Prancercise: Workout Internet Fad or Answer to Obesity Epidemic? (video)

By    |   Friday, 31 May 2013 10:01 AM EDT

Forget Jazzercise and Zumba, because a new workout regimen is taking the Internet by storm – thanks to fitness instructor Joanna Rohrback, the creator of Prancercise.

In her YouTube video "Prancercise: A Fitness Workout," Rohrback, 61, introduces audiences to the phenomenon of prancing around like a horse in an effort to get in shape. Described as "a springy, rhythmic way of moving forward, similar to a horse's gait and is ideally induced by elation," Prancercise is the Internet's newest viral gem.

Rohrback, of Coral Springs, Fla., created the workout routine back in 1989 and uploaded the video to YouTube last year. It just caught on this week and has drawn more than 2.1 million views.

The Prancercise video also has a companion book, which was published in 2012.

And apparently, Prancercise works. Just take a look at the reviews of Rohrback's book on Amazon.

"At first I was skeptical, but after convincing several of my co-workers to try Prancercise, I am a believer," wrote one reviewer. "I lead a daily Prancercise at work and people come out of their office, Prancercise for a while and then go back to work. Afterward we high-five, enjoy an orange mocha Frappuccino, and head back to work knowing we let our inner-horse out to pasture."

"This book finally let me experience my inner-horse," another review read. "I was like a child again, prancing through the woods. At one point, I was convinced I had 4 legs. A smile radiated from my face. I punched the sky, knowing that I was free. Call me Prancer, for I walk my path with joy."
