Casual family pictures of Prince George, cuddled close by his mama Kate and flanked by proud papa Prince William, were released by Kensington Palace this week.
The photos brought home the informal approach the two royals are taking. No studied formal portraits are these. Instead, the pictures taken by Kate’s father, Michael Middleton, are a little blown out in the background and shaded in the front, and even feature family pets.

Prince George’s brow is wrinkled in baby consternation and appears to have slept through the photo session.
Although In Touch posted a Tweet loving the photos, others didn’t agree:
Photographer Eddie Mulholland told The Telegraph, “They are lovely snaps for a grandfather to have taken, but in terms of the quality, they are not really what you want for such a historic picture.”
Mulholland went on to criticize the flat quality of the pictures, shaded faces in the foreground, and said, “The photograph with the dogs is the worst. One of the dogs in the corner looks like a furry rug.”
Calling the photos “a family affair,”
Yahoo! emphasized that the photos break the royal tradition of having first photos done professionally.
In a CNN interview and the first done about the new prince, Prince William called his son “a little rascal” and talked about the adjustments of parenting, including battling car seats and diapers. The full special with that interview, “Prince William’s Passion: New Hope, New Father,” will air Sept. 15.
