Prince Harry and Meghan Markle made their first royal appearance since their engagement on Friday in Nottingham, People magazine noted.
The couple, who were to appear at the Nottingham Contemporary for a World AIDS day celebration, started their morning with a royal walkabout, greeting civic leaders lining up to meet them and waving, smiling and mingling with members of the public.
Harry has visited Nottingham eight times in the past five years and, according to The Guardian, was excited to introduce his fiancée to the community "that has become very special to him," his spokesman said.
Community members had gathered from earlier in the morning in hope of catching a glimpse, and a chat, with the royal couple.
Among the crowds was Kathryn Moran, a 25-year-old a barrister, who said the royal couple instilled her faith in fairytale endings.
"You've got to believe in the fairytale, that's part of the excitement," she said, per The Guardian.
Her friend Abbie Goodband, a 22-year-old administration worker at Boots HQ, added that Markle, who is a divorcee, was a relatable figure.
Caroline Cartwright told People she was a big fan of "Suits" and was excited to exchange a few words with Markle.
"She is just as beautiful as she is on TV," Cartwright told People. "She is absolutely perfect, most wonderful and perfect for him."
Meanwhile, Claire Kelsall handed the couple a celebration card made by her 7-year-old daughter, Ruby.
"The card had 'Congratulations Harry and Meghan'," Claire Kelsall told People. "She drew a picture of the ring and it had a picture of the couple inside."
The Daily Mail noted that this was the couple's first official engagement in their six-month tour of the U.K.
