Prince William issued a statement agreeing with his brother, Harry, that privacy and restraint are needed, despite rumors that he was not in agreement with his brother releasing a statement about his relationship with girlfriend Meghan Markle.
Prince Harry released a statement on Nov. 8 after his relationship with Markle became known, because Markle was being harassed, and Harry began to fear for her safety. Markle, who is biracial, was referenced by the UK Daily Mail as being “(almost) straight outta Compton,” a reference to her African-American mother living in the Los Angeles neighborhood of Crenshaw, according to Bustle.
Markle stars in the television show “Suits” and lives in Toronto where the show films. According to Today, Markle has also had reporters and photographers try to break into her home, camp outside her mother’s house, and offer her ex-boyfriend bribes for personal information about her. The Nov. 8 statement said that a line was crossed and objected to the “wave of abuse and harassment” to which Markle had been subjected.
After rumors began to swirl that Prince William disapproved of his brother’s rare public statement about his personal life, William apparently decided to set the record straight with a statement of his own: “The Duke of Cambridge absolutely understands the situation concerning privacy and supports the need for Prince Harry to support those closest to him,” USA Today reported.
“It is not right that a few months into a relationship with him that Ms. Markle should be subjected to such a storm,” the statement continued. “He knows commentators will say this is ‘the price she has to pay’ and that ‘this is all part of the game.’ He strongly disagrees. This is not a game—it is her life and his,” USA Today reported the statement as saying.
