'Project Runway' Billboard Nudity Too Racy for LA, But Not NYC

By    |   Thursday, 11 July 2013 09:05 AM EDT

The billboard for the upcoming season of "Project Runway" was nearly nixed in Los Angeles for being too racy, but it eventually got the green light to run this week after some skillful cropping.

The ad for the fashion design competition show featured hosts Heidi Klum and Tim Gunn dressed in royal garb reigning over a group of nude models. Klum tweeted out the image Tuesday with the caption, "Designers! We need clothing for these people!"

But, according to Variety, Los Angeles' Department of Building and Safety said the billboard's nudity went against its policy prohibiting "obscene matters."

"The photo was set to run on billboards, posters, websites, bus shelters, and in magazines, but the nude bodies were just a little too risqué for the public in L.A.," TooFab.com reported. "So a version with underwear will run in its place."

Now, though, it seems the ad has gotten approved, according to AdWeek.com, albeit with some Photoshop tweaks and slight cropping. It will only appear in one location — above the Sunset Strip.

The same billboard was approved with no problem in New York City.

"Project Runway" Season 12 will premiere July 18 at 9 p.m. EST on Lifetime.
