Qatar Tourists Encouraged to Cover Up From Shoulders to Knees

Tourists to Qatar will be met with signs encouraging them to cover up from shoulders to knees and respect the values of the small Middle Eastern nation.

The posters being distributed by the Reflect Your Respect drive gives the message to “Help us preserve Qatar’s culture and values. Please dress modestly in public places.”

The grassroots campaign started in 2012 under another name, but is being relaunched, Doha News said.

Women and girls will hand the posters and flyers out at public places in June.

Campaign spokeswoman Umm Abdullah said some Qataris don’t go to malls and other places because they’re offended by the immodest clothing.

“Our kids as well, we don’t want them to end up imitating this — we want to preserve our traditions and our values,” she told Doha News. “They (expats) have their own places where they don’t have to be covered — but we have the right to go to hospitals, to the market, to the malls, to the beach, without seeing these things.”

The flyers offer specific information on dress, including the phrase that “leggings are not pants.”

Abdullah told Doha News that people handing out the flyers will make every effort to be respectful, and that they plan to offer chocolates and flowers in an effort to be friendly.

“I will just speak to them quietly by myself, with my little daughter who is only seven. It’s embarrassing to be preached at in public places,” she told Doha.

Some people went online to show their support of the campaign, encouraging Qatar to retain its values, while others gave it a thumbs down.
