The Queen turns 94 today and although celebrations are muted this year as she spends the special day under lockdown with her husband, the Duke of Edinburgh, at Windsor Castle in Berkshire, the mood is still jovial.
Birthday wishes from Prince William, Kate Middleton and Prince Charles already have been made and the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are expected to send their tributes later today. The Queen also will have face time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren via Zoom video calls, Daily Mail reported.
In honor of the big day, Buckingham Palace has released video footage to Twitter of the Queen as a child in celebration of her birthday. In the clip, Princess Elizabeth and her younger sister, Princess Margaret, are seen playing as toddlers.
"To those of you also celebrating your birthdays today at home, with or without your loved ones - we send you many happy returns," The Royal Family wrote in a separate tweet.
Kensington Palace wished the Queen a happy birthday in a tweet with a photo of Prince William and Kate Middleton with the monarch while the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall shared a collection of photos of Charles and his mother in honor of the Queen's birthday.
The Queen celebrates two birthdays. The first is the day she was born in April and the second being her official one in June. Each year this event is celebrated with the Trooping the Color ceremony, but the tradition has been canceled this year. It is also custom for the bells of Westminster Abbey, where the Queen was crowned, to ring on her birthday but this year they will remain silent along with the gun salutes, according to the U.K.'s Metro.
