Randy Travis Makes Rare Public Appearance at Dolly Parton Concert

By    |   Thursday, 05 June 2014 10:49 AM EDT

Randy Travis, the country music legend who suffered a stroke in Texas last year, made a surprise appearance Saturday at a Dolly Parton concert just across the Red River in Thackerville, Oklahoma.

The 55-year-old performer, who lives in Tioga, Texas, has been keeping a low profile ever since his stroke, which occurred last summer after he was admitted to a hospital for a heart condition caused by a virus. He then suffered the stroke and was forced to undergo surgery.

Travis reportedly suffers from a chronic condition known as idiopathic cardiomyopathy, a scarring of his heart muscle that causes it to be weak and makes it difficult for it to pump.

Travis, though, was all smiles at the Winstar Casino after receiving a shout-out from fellow country music legend Parton during her concert, according to People magazine.

"There are some people you just love and admire for their talents. Tonight, one of those people are here," Parton, 68, said. "Randy Travis, wherever you are, I hope you are enjoying the show."

Entertainment Tonight reported that Travis' fiancée, Mary Beougher, surprised him by taking the singer to Parton's concert. Travis walked from his bus into the concert venue using a cane, according to Parton's publicist Kirt Webster.

"Randy is doing great and is expected to make a full recovery," Webster told ET.

Travis then joined Parton and country singer Janie Fricke backstage after the concert.

"It was so great to have Randy at my show," Parton said to People. "He was looking good and doing great."

Parton shared her feelings on Twitter as well.

NashvilleGab.com described the satisfaction of seeing Travis out in public again.

"Wow! Randy Travis looks really, really good," the website wrote on Thursday. "Randy's public appearances have been few and far between since his multiple medical issues, including a stroke and brain surgery, last summer. It's really great to see him out and about and looking so healthy."
