Raven-Symone: Michelle Obama Univision 'Ape' Comment Not Racist

By    |   Wednesday, 18 March 2015 02:56 PM EDT

Raven-Symoné is under fire this week after defending a fired Univision anchor’s allegedly racist "Planet of the Apes" Michelle Obama comment, chalking it up to the fact that “some people do look like animals.”

The actress' remarks stemmed from the recent controversy involving Rodner Figueroa, who was fired from Univision last week after saying “Michelle Obama looks like she's part of the cast of ‘Planet of the Apes’” during a segment of “El Gordo Y La Flaca” in which a make-up artist transformed himself to look like the first lady, MSNBC reported.

During Monday’s episode of “The View,” Symoné said she didn’t think the comment was racist.

“Some people do look like animals,” she said. “Is that rude? I look like a bird.”

Figueroa has apologized for the comment and explained that he was referring to the make-up artist’s work, not the first lady.

Still, his comments — and Symoné's apparent defense of them — generated some criticism.

The "That's So Raven" star later took to Twitter in defense of her stance.

Symoné previously sparked criticism during a 2014 interview with Oprah Winfrey in which she said she didn’t want to put herself in into categories such as "gay" or "African-American," the New York Daily News reported.

Twitter users seemed incredulous.
