The original movie centered around a genius, played by Val Kilmer, who was in college but was losing interest in studying and more interested in having fun. It grossed $13 million.
Entertainment Weekly said the new "Real Genius" sitcom will be about two present-day co-workers, one a “rock-star genius” and the other more of a shy, quiet type, who can’t get along.
The idea of a comedy reboot of “Real Genius” was met with varied reactions online.
“Imagine Sheldon Cooper as a 14-year-old college student. Hilarity ensues. I like it and I loved the movie,” one person wrote on Deadline’s site.
Some of the negative comments seemed to come along with concern that NBC and Happy Madison would do a disservice to “Real Genius” and Kilmer.
“Get Val and I’m in,” one person wrote. “Otherwise, there should be a massive flogging at NBC.”
“This article has me in tears for fears that it may be a huge disappointment,”
a commenter on The Mary Sue wrote.
