U.S. Rep. Peter King called President Donald Trump's North Korea meeting announcement "historic" in a Twitter post on Friday, but warned that America should be "cautious" moving forward against the reclusive communist country.
News of the breakthrough meeting with North Korea leader Kim Jong Un came the night before in what is expected to be the first ever meeting between a sitting U.S. president and the country. It was only several months ago when both leaders were threatening nuclear against each other, CNN reported.
The New York Republican shared his approval of the announcement on social media.
South Korea national security adviser Chung Eui-yong delivered the invitation from Kim to Trump after a South Korean delegation visited Pyongyang earlier this week, CNN said, and the meeting would take place sometime in May.
Chung said Kim had offered to put Pyongyang's nuclear and missile program on the table in the talks, a key condition for the United States and its Western allies, CNN noted.
King also pointed out in his tweet that North Korea was willing to suspend nuclear testing while the United States continued is joint military maneuvers with South Korea. It is something the two countries have done annually, and has been usually met with threats from North Korea.
