Reporter Maria Fernanda Mora attacked a groping soccer fan last week with her microphone, but had to defend herself on social media for her actions.
The Fox Sports Mexico reporter was getting fan reaction outside of Guadalajara stadium April 26 after the local team beat Toronto when Mora charged that a fan directly behind her touched her inappropriately as they jumped around, the Daily Mail reported.
Mora could be seen in the live shot immediately turning around and whacking the fan several times with her microphone before walking off camera. She defended her actions in a Spanish-language statement on Twitter Monday.
"What happened to me early last Thursday happens to thousands of women every day in countless public spaces," Mora wrote, according to the website LAD Bible. "The difference is that it happened to me during a live link television and I decided to defend myself.
"… I thought, 'It could be an accidental rubbing because of people's pushing,' and I kept talking to the camera. This guy, emboldened because I did not react and kept doing my job, put his hand between my buttocks twice more. I decided to defend myself. I do not regret at all in my way of acting before his attack because I had previously suffered harassment in the performance of my journalistic work," she continued in her statement.
While the LAD Bible reported that some Twitter users accused Mora of wanting the attention for fame, many others praised her actions.
The Sun reported that numerous high profile news presenters in Mexico have since come out to defend Mora on Twitter using the hashtag #UnaSomosTodas, meaning "One Like Us All."
