A reverse driver who drove his car backwards for miles down one of Los Angeles’ busiest streets on Thursday is being investigated after the vehicle’s journey along the winding Laurel Canyon Road was recorded in a cellphone video.
Kevin Zanazanian, a Los Angeles realtor, told CBS Los Angelesthat he noticed the Audi driving backwards near Mulholland Drive on Thursday afternoon and started recording it with his cellphone. The vehicle continued on its course for at least two miles.
“It definitely was a shocker for me,” Zanazanian told CBS, adding that he believed he saw a man driving with a female passenger. “It was definitely like a movie and I just think either this individual had an argument or a fight or something or just possibly just wanted to be a cool guy.”
Los Angeles police spokesman Drake Madison said that the incident is being investigated by the department's West Traffic Bureau and that authorities want to
identify the driver, according to the Los Angeles Times.
Police Sgt. Tito Mariano told CBS that the driver could be hit with several charges during the course of the investigation.
“Reckless driving, unsafe speed, crossing double-yellow lines, failure to drive on the right half of the roadway . . . Imagine if it was you or your family member driving and being struck by someone doing something irresponsible,” said Mariano, according to CBS.
Lt. Andre Belotto, a watch commander with the
department's West Traffic Bureau, told KTLA-TV that the Los Angeles city attorney would make the final call on charges if the driver can be positively identified. Belotto also stated that since no one was hurt, any violations would likely be misdemeanors.
Some viewers on social media expressed surprise that the driver negotiated the streets in reverse while others wondered if the video was even real.
